Modern Perspectives brings together voices from the IMPP community and beyond to explore psychoanalytic ideas, clinical experience, and the complexities of contemporary life.
We welcome contributions from psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, candidates, educators, researchers, consultants, organizational practitioners, and other professionals interested in bringing psychoanalytic thinking into conversation with the questions that shape our work, relationships, institutions, and culture.
You don’t need to be an academic writer to contribute. We are interested in thoughtful, engaging writing that has something meaningful to say.
What Might You Write About?
Topics might include:

- Clinical Practice & Technique — therapeutic process, transference and countertransference, resistance, listening, and clinical experience
- Modern Psychoanalysis Today — contemporary applications and evolving perspectives
- Psychoanalysis & Everyday Life — relationships, intimacy, identity, parenting, loss, creativity, aging, and emotional life
- Culture & Society — technology, media, social change, belonging, polarization, and contemporary cultural experience
- Organizations & Leadership — group dynamics, authority, leadership, workplace relationships, and organizational life
- Learning & Becoming — psychoanalytic education, supervision, professional development, and becoming an analyst
- Psychoanalytic Ideas Revisited — Freud and other psychoanalytic thinkers considered through a contemporary lens
- Books, Film & the Arts — psychoanalytic perspectives on literature, film, television, music, visual art, and creativity
These are starting points, not limits. If you have an idea that invites psychoanalytic curiosity, we would like to hear about it.
Submission Guidelines
Length: Most articles should be approximately 800–1,500 words. Shorter reflections are also welcome.
Audience & Style: Write for an engaged professional audience rather than an academic journal. We encourage clear, accessible writing and ask authors to explain specialized terminology when appropriate.
Clinical Material: Authors are responsible for appropriately protecting patient and client confidentiality and observing applicable ethical and professional standards.
Sources: Formal academic citations are not required, but sources should be identified when substantially drawing upon another author’s ideas, research, or published work.
Author Profile: Please include a 50–100 word professional biography, your credentials and affiliations as you would like them displayed, and, if desired, a professional headshot.
Editorial Review: Submissions are reviewed prior to publication. IMPP may suggest editing for clarity, length, formatting, or consistency with the purpose and tone of Modern Perspectives. Publication remains at IMPP’s editorial discretion.

Every guest article includes the author’s name and professional profile information, giving readers an opportunity to learn more about the person behind the perspective.
Modern Perspectives also welcomes thoughtful reader engagement. Comments are moderated and must be approved before appearing publicly to help maintain a respectful environment for professional dialogue.
